Chapter: Chapter 3
This chapter described the steps used to develop computer-based information system. It described the linear cycle which is composed of five phases used to build the system. It also includes two additional phases that take place after the system is built. Project development proceeds in sequence through these phases.
Each phase in the linear cycle has a defined objective and uses a number of activities to achieve this objective. Each phase produces an output that includes the phase product and a management report which describes any difficulties encountered in the phase and presents a plan for subsequent phase.
The chapter concluded by suggesting that the linear cycle may not be appropriate for all projects. In a particular, it is difficult to use for systems that do not have clearly defined objectives. Alternative cycles may be necessary to build such systems.
