This chapter described the first database design step: converting the E-R model to a relational model. The relational model is then checked to see if it contains any redundancies. A number of criteria for such tests were described. These criteria were defined in terms of functional dependencies and relation keys.
Relations that satisfy the criteria are known as normal relations. A number of normal forms were defined in this chapter designers should ensure that their data model only contains relations in the highest normal form.
