Book: Introduction to System Analysis and Design.

Author: Igor  Hawryzkiewycz

Reference No. T 57.6 H38 199la

Chapter:  Chapter 11

This chapter described the first database design step: converting the E-R model to a relational model. The relational model is then checked to see if it contains any redundancies. A number of criteria for such tests were described. These criteria were defined in terms of functional dependencies and relation keys.

Relations that satisfy the criteria are known as normal relations. A number of normal forms were defined in this chapter designers should ensure that their data model only contains relations in the highest normal form.
