Case study 5
Dan Bricklin
Cofounder of Software arts.
Software Arts was founded by Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston in 1970 to produce VisiCalc. The first electronic spreadsheets.
He meets Bob when he does his thesis for his job as a student which is limited services terminal. They became friend and since then they were both looking for doing a business in computer.
Bob works as a consultant and Dan also worked for some big company like DEC- Digital Equipment Corporation. He also worked at Fasfax Corporation which is a small company. From his experience in working in two different companies he saw the difference between them.
Dan worked at APL system together with Bob on the basic systems. Then he got this idea of interpreted language together with the word processor.
It was January 2 1979 when they incorporated in a business and negotiated with personal software.
Back in college, Dan started programming at Bob’s apartment. He prototype VisiCalc and then he wrote a prototype basic. They started discussing it. Dan does the prototype but since he still in school he does not have enough time to program it Bob program it.
It was October 1979 when VisiCalc was release. It ignited the personal computer software revolution.
One of the biggest hurdles is the original vision of an electronic blackboard or work area. Then he had this idea of calculating and then recalculating.
VisiCalc was the “killer app” for personal computers.
“As business software Arts Falls was just as its rise”.
