Case study 24

Philip Greenspun

Cofounder, ArsDigita

ArsDigita were founded in 1997 by Philip Greenspun together with some friends. It is a consulting company.

            ArsDigita is a photo.net a photography site.

The particular problem that this startup encountered is when conflict arises between the new investors and the founders. They marginalized and fired most of the founders. The company crashed and dissolved in 2002.

What motivate the founders to this startup? Greenspun was motivated in response to people downloading the software, free open software.

The unique thing about this startup is when they help each programmer to develop an independent professional reputation.

People used the service of ArsDigita because people want the free open source software that ArsDigita offered.

The impact of this startup to the history of internet is it embodiment a new model for software consulting and as an all-too colorful example of danger on ventures capitalist.

It is possible in a third world country if there are good programmers like them, but as what I saw it is not possible.

Things that I learned:

From this startup I learn that Sometimes it is good to be acquired the company to someone and do another one.

From Greenspun I learned that programmers are very unlikable person and they are not pleasing to manage.
