Caterina Fake

Cofounder, Flckr

Caterina Fake Started Ludicorp in the summer of 2002 with Stewart Butterfield and Jason Classon. Ludicorp is from the Latin word “ludus” which means for play. “Game never-ending” is the company’s first product. It was a light weight web based game and a typical for massively   multiplayer games. Most of those have sword and Sorcery or science fiction themes, and are usually Cd Rom based. It was very much based around social interactions, you could form groups, instant message each other, and there was a social network associated with it.

The team knew they were unto something big and put game never ending on hold and develop a new photo sharing community site called ”flckr”. Flckr was kind of a lark. It was a side project that was built while it is a process of game never ending. It started off as a feature. It was a kind of IM in which you could drag and drop photos unto people’s desktops and show them what you are looking at. Flckr became extremely popular and was acquired by yahoo in March 2005. Tagging became a great part how Flckr found its success. Tagging really revolutionized the way that the product behaved. It is an incredibly simple concept. You just need to add keyword to the photograph and once it s networked with all of these other people, you can see not only all the things that you’ve tagged but also what everyone  else in the system has tagged themselves in the public stuff.

With its emphasis on user generated counter and its devoted online community cited examples; Flckr is one of the most commonly cited examples of web 2.0 companies.

Things that I learned:

From this start up I learned that even though you are a girl you can do something and can prove that women are also like man. Trying and trying to make the something to be successful is one thing or attitude that a starter should have.

I also learned that Flickr is one of the most commonly cited examples of web 2.0 companies.
