Case study 17

Mark Fletcher

Founder, ONElist, bloglines

Mark Fletcher started ONElist when he was the senior software engineer for the Sun Microsystems. ONElist is a free Internet email list service. ONElist got over 20 million users while bloggers only had a fraction of that. He got money from ONElist because it grew fast.

Mark started ONElist because he wanted to mail his parents. Which became eGroups but he sold it to yahoo then left for vacation. Then he started another company, the Trustic, while doing that he was also doing another thing which became the blogline. He was running the spam when he realized that spam is not good. That time he was using bloglines just for himself. Nobody knew blogs then. So he decided to put something and see how it goes.

Mark used same company that had set up for anti Virus Company. Then they did a quick shift unto another product. They went online on the late 2003 of June and get press coverage. He put it on June 2003 and he invites a friend to do some marketing and went there.

Blogline grew rapidly. Reporters used it and talk about it.

Their biggest competitor is the NewsGator; it is as close to what they were doing.

Mark Fletcher startups typify many of the web aspects that we had today.

Things that I learned

  • In starting up a company I learned that figuring out when is the right time to sell the product is one of the best ways to get money.

  • Company became valuables because of its users

  • Solving a problem first before anything else.

  • It is better to work with somebody that you are comfortable with.
