Case study
Mike Lazaridis
Cofounder, Research in Motion
Research in Motion (RIM) was founded by Mike Lazaridis with Doug Feigrn in 1994. They were still undergraduate at University of Waterloo.
Mike and Doug started working together during in highshool. It was late 70s and computers were still punch card systems. They were playing with this computer it was digital equipment corporation computers trainers. They learned that there was an actual fundamental for computers like building gates, memory circuits and other. The knowledge they know help them a lot as time goes on. Their teacher sees their potential when it comes to computer application and he understood that computer gave us the ability to send information and allowed us to control the RF process. But it was more than a year before Mike understood what it really means.
They are now studying at the University of Waterloo. This University has massive computer system. It was big IBM mainframe system. One time Mike went to the computer area and went straight to the terminal and do not use the punch card, they started using email. They were also working with computer networks. Walton (Waterloo Local Area Network Project) was called for their researched program. Their last year came end they’ve been doing computer programming work.
They started a company during 3rd Year and got a contract which made them busy. They also hired people. It was sin the 4th year when they started RIM. During his 3rd year he was working with STOIC which is an interpretive language that was getting in microcomputers.
Mike started to do RIM so he called up his friend Doug and told him that he need his help. They got a project with General Motors and National Film Board and Kodak which led to the Emmy Awards and Oscars. From general Motors accomplishment RFP had been out for 2 years they got a copy of it and recognized that they couldn’t do something without the techniques that they learned in the Universities.
RIM was one of the first Networks to appreciate wireless networks. Blackberry became popular. RIM went public in 1997 and it was one of Canada’s most admire technology company.
Things that I learned:
From this start up I’ve learned that all things are being learned. Attaining Education can help us achieving our goals and it is not always money in setting up startup. There should be a passion for it. In starting a company there should be knowledge in doing things. In starting up we should also consider other ideas.
