Chapter 3

Quote: Before you interview someone else, you must in effect interview yourself. You need to know your biases and how will it affect your perceptions. Your education, intellect, upbringing, emotions and ethical framework all serve as powerful filters for what you will be hearing in your interviews.

Interviewing

Before interviewing someone, the one who will conduct the interview must know the biases and need to think and visualize everything for a successful interview.

An information-gathering interview is a directed conversation with a question and answer format.

Opinion of the one you’re interviewing is important, in addition to it, the interviewer should know how to capture the feeling of the interviewee.

Goals are also important in interviewing. In an interview you are building a relationship with a stranger. Trust and understand is needed but controlling the interview must maintain.

In preparation to an interview there are 5 major steps:

  1. Read background material
  2. Establish interviewing objectives
  3. Decide whom to interview
  4. Prepare the interviewee
  5. Decide on question types and structure

In number 1. The interviewer needs to read and understand the background information of the interviewee. It can help him/her to be sensitive to the language the organizational members use in describing their selves and the organization. Another benefit of researching is to maximize the time spend in the interviews.

Use the background information that the interviewer had gathered to establish an interview objective.

When deciding whom to interview, key people at all levels must be included.

The interviewee must be prepared during the interview so the interviewer must contact the interviewee ahead the interview.

Proper questioning is the heart of interviewing. The basic question types are open-ended and closed. In deciding the question, you need to think about the effect of each question.
