The scope of information system today is the whole enterprise. Chapter 4 is all about Identifying and Selecting System Development Projects. In this chapter it is describe project identification and selection process, describe the corporate strategic planning and information systems and information process. It is explains the relationship between corporate strategic and information systems and information systems planning. Analyze information a system planning matrices determine affinity between information systems and IS projects and it is describes the three classes of enter net electronic commerce application: internets, intranets, and extranets.
In identifying and selecting systems development projects it is describe the general process for identifying and selecting projects and producing the deliverable and outcomes of this process.
Project identification and selection consist of three primary activities; first is identifying potential development project which projects are identified by both top-down and bottoms- up initiatives, next is classifying and ranking IS development projects it is focuses on assessing the relative merit of potential projects and the last is selecting development projects it is the actual selection of projects for further development.
An important project evaluation method widely used for assessing information systems development projects is a value chain analysis. Value chain analysis is the process of analyzing organization activities for making product and/or services to determine where value is added and cost is occurred.
Many organizations have founded that in order to make good project selection decision a clear understanding of overall organizational business strategy and objectives is required. Incremental commitment is a strategy in a system analysis and design in which the project is reviewed after each phase and continuation of the projects is rejustifed.
Careful planning and selection of projects alone will certainly not solve of a problem.
Most of the analyst believes that a decupling approach, driven by top management commitment, is a pre-requisite to effectively apply information systems in order to reach organizational objectives. After understanding of the current and future enterprise, a corporate strategic planning is referred as transition strategy. Corporate strategic planning is an ongoing process that defines the mission, objectives, and strategies of an organization.
All successful organization has a mission, mission statement is a statement that makes it clear what business a company is in, and after defining the mission it has objectives, objective statement is a series of statements that express an organization’s qualitative and quantitative goals for reaching a desired future position. Competitive strategy is the method by which an organization attempts to achieve its mission and objectives.
The focuses of this chapter was to provide a clearer understanding of how organization identify and select projects. Thus effective projects identification and selection is essential of its organizations are to realize the greatest benefits from information system…
