Case Study

Mena Trott

(Cofounder, Six Apart)

Six Apart was founded by Mena and Ben Trott. They are not satisfied with the blogging software that’s why Mena and Ben decided to develop their own. It was hosted blogging platform with a special networking component that was launched as Vox(formerly as Comet). I learned that the name of the company is from the number of days between their birthdays. I also learned that their reason for building the TypePad is that they wanted to have a service that anybody could use.

The company started with a blog called Dollar Shot. Later on, they created a blogging tool. The release of Movable Type blogging is accidental. Having their customers from day one, it became their key to be a company. They started working on Type Pad. They did receive donations to pay their rent and keeping the company working. They also have angel money. They decided to set up their company as an LLC instead of C Corporation. They read about LLC having investments, still they are not decided to what they will do.

Shareholder.com was doing a lot of stuff for industry. They were surprised how people ask them to make things easier to use. The things that went wrong to their company is when BARAK act as CEO and they focused on operating the business. Another thing that went wrong is skimping on hardware.

The thing that people misunderstood to them is the company’s licensing. People panic and people’s impression changed because of their licensing that causes good to the company and user but people didn’t know about it.

The company didn’t worry for their competitors but instead they are worried for the “Blogger”. Yahoo and Microsoft is also their competitor. Six Apart is behind with other company because they start to trickle out and shipping.

There is a time that they wanted to quit. It was the pre-launch of TypePad. The pressure push Mena to quit but she realize the importance of things like the situations had good opportunities and never lose hope.

Women usually doesn’t go to start up, but for Mena it is because the women are into being a designer, marketing personnel, and communication personnel.

The surprising thing that happen to their company are; first, they have 100 people in the company. Second, their company still stands for four years.

The best quality that Mena Trott has is without sounding and I think is being honest. Being famous helps a lot to her, she now have confidence. For them they got what the people really want and they become popular.

There are a lot of people who criticize her, like they are stupid. As a result, she taught of giving up and thinks that she never done things like that. She topped blogging because people were critical for her and that’s the fact that it is the consequences of being a popular.
