Case Study
Craig Newmark
Founder, Craiglists
In 1995 Craig Newmark started an e-mail list to publicize events in San Francisco. He switched from mailing list to a web site and add categories. In 1999, he decided his hobby to become his business. Jim Buckmaster became lead programmer and CFO in 2000, and then became CEO. I learned the good thing about their company is there was no time of quitting. An entrepreneurial lesson that you really do need to follow is your instincts. Try hard no to be sanctimonious.
In 1994 when Newmark was in Charles Schwab was working for computer security. In 1995, he started sending event to his friends using cclist, Pine. He uses a lot of operating system such as Solaris, Pine, and Linux. When they are contracting, they will do it for half hour.
In 1997 Newmark’s company got one million viewers a month. He also added that banner ads will just result to slow site. In 1998/1999 their principle of charging for something less effective occurs to their company. It is being dictated by the community.
In making the company real they needed full-time people in different areas. They did mistakes about in legal settlements, but with the help of Jim they got resolve the problem. back in their apartment time, the problem that they meet is when you run your server to someone else’s machine and have weak customer service it will be a big problem. they didn’t worry about the spammers and other people trying to take advantage because they have a good culture trust on the site. They even set up flagging for the community to regulate site.
In December 1997 they took a lunch for deciding craigslist as full time. Newmark funded it and they never take investment money but took few loans. They have some help, some favors but it take a lot of time. Their employees were from the site. They add features based on the feedback of the people. There were investors knocking to their doors, they were tempted but they hold to it. The most frustrating being with broker is that this broker do all things, bad things, even if to evade the company’s tools.
In the early days Newmark was surprised by people who are trusthworthy and good, share same values.
When companies want to buy them, say no. the company is being sell in2004. People think the company of Newmark was nonprofit and some were sold to ebay but it is not true.
