SYANAL

Chapter 18-20

Case Study:

 Craiglist/Craig Newmark

 Flicker/Catrina Fake

 Brewster Kahle/WAIS (Alexa Internet)

The founder of Craiglist is Craig Newmark and the co-founders is Jim Buckmaster, after they made Craig list he  joined another startup but he left it because he want to get serious about Craiglist, and the it’s  continue to expand and know  it has 200 site around the world. The main reason they started the made it started Craiglist is because people telling about, how the equality brokerage business would work someday and he decided to do something.

They motivate it through program and flagging. The problem they addressing they startup Craiglist is the problem about brokerage, before Craiglist is just email list and switched it from a mailing list to a website and added categories. People want it and they are the one who suggesting it, they want it also because it easy to manage and it has a categories.  In the history of internet Craiglist operating on Polaris system and then Linux, the exiting system before Craiglist is CC list using pines.

If I am the cofounder of Craiglist   I support Newmark for his startup and from this startup I try to learned from it and then I make it as my basis to make another startup again.  The startup is possible in the third world country like Philippines because in our country we have also fast growing technology and I think this kind of startup is possible to operate here but the problem is nobody starting it..

The things I learned from this story is you can learn a lot of things from your friends and it is not bad to acknowledge them when you success from those things you learned from them. The things I like most in the story is the advice they gave  to the reader or to the person want to start also in Newmark side he said trust your instinct and your moral compass, this is the way people live, prefer to be cynical and you can see the real life..

The founder of Flickr is Catarina Fake and the cofounders are Stewart Butterfield and Jason Classon. The main reason why they made Flickr is for the development of Game Neverending it massively multi-player online game with real time interactions through messaging  (IM), then they added new features –chat environment with photo sharing then it became Flickr and game Neverending parallel.

Flickr address to the problem of social networking, like digital identity, putting photographs online, and talking to their friends online. It was improvement of Ludicorp, people want this because it is solve their problem in social networking and for them it is pretty and riskily. In this networking they can show their self fairly and pointless activity, they can collect up of all their friends in Flickr.

They do it because people want something new and people like it. In the history of  internet Flickr start not for photo sharing site but it comes that they decided to build a photo-sharing site and other startup influenced them like Ofoto, Shutterfly and Snapfish and they have almost the same business area. The unique in this startup is photo sharing as valuable enough and some of their service has offered in other startup but not all.

Flickr before is Ludicorp development, If I am the cofounder of Flickr I did something different from it to make choices of customer. This startup is applicable to the third world country like Philippines because most of the Filipinos are social networking they like sharing photo, game and chatting.

The things I learned from this story is the world Ludus which is the Latin word for play, this word used for naming the company Ludicorp.

The most interesting for me is the image of women in the business she said that the women are more passionate in work, they less do it for money and more because they love it.

After I read the Flickr which I enjoy most because the cofounder is women and for me it challenging to read. Before I read the story I browse it and see for some interested question, then I marked it then I start to read. The founder of WAIS (Wide Area Information Servers) is Brewster Kahle and his cofounder Bruce Gilliat. WAIS is a internet search software.

The main reason Brewster in doing WAIS is to make network services-stuff that take completely for granted now but the idea was that you could use remote machine to answer question. They motivate it through working hard to best class and consulting to the people who has experienced and expert on this area.

This startup address to the problem in remote machine  that can answer question in the net. It is entirely new, it is the first system that was trying to answer question in the over the net and it was the first publishing system it came before Gopher and before the web.

If I am the cofounder of WAIS I support it and help to make it the best startup in the net. I think that this kind of startup is also applicable in the third world country like the Philippines because we have also similar things that can use it as servers. I believe also that it help the most of the Filipino people in their work or in their everyday life.

The things I learned in this story is the  I make good business partner,  Kahle said to be able to make good business partner both of you  must compatibly and  both of you need mutual respect, because finding business partner is fantastically valuable things to do.

The most interesting question I read is all about the learning’s from their customer that make their surprise, they said it is the way they work In the business people because they are very straight forward.
