Case Study (Yahoo, Research In Motion (RIM), Marimba)

After I read the story of Yahoo I learned that Yahoo began in 1994 founded by Jerry Yang and David Filo and Tim Brady write the business plan for it.

Their main goals when they started startups is letting everyone on the internet and making some money for it, So far they achieve they goal in very short time, but they experience some problems like pornography they always talked about it and asking “Whose responsible for it?” definitely they found out that they responsible for it, and to protect some minors they find out what are age of user before they pass the pictures looking for.

The question make me interesting was when Livingston ask if they background in business and engineering helped them? Brady said that his business education make him confidence to what he knew and what he did not knew, like me I think if I going to put startups also I think I need also to know first what I am know and what I do not know in that particular business before I enter, I can say that they make me inspire to follow them but I not really good in IT business so I can pursue for it unless my next 4 terms in Benilde helped me a lot.

The advice they gave to someone want to put startups is; know yourself first, try to do as much thinking at fronts as to what breaking points are. You need to know where the line is, don’t include emotion in business because if you do that in business you don’t act rationally and it makes your company down. I think they right saying that because in my view points business is purely business to success you need to be rational at all time and make the best as you can do in doing such things.

The next story I read after Yahoo is Research In Motion (RIM), it is founded by Mike Lazardis with his friends Doug Fregin in 1994 while undergraduates in University of Waterloo. RIM is one of the first companies t appreciate the importance of wireless networks, it went in to the public in 1997 and as one of Canada’s most admired technology their product is Blackberry it is one of the innovation that change the way organization operate.

The things make me interesting in this story is the experience of Lazardis to bear on tricky problem, he said that you can solve it with elegantly and quickly through your knowledge, just remember your exposure and stock knowledge in high school. They said that those students who are expose in the future technology and not reducing it to current it make them a sense to go for something new that helped in  business.

They said also if you want to go in IT business you need to consider some question like; how long you can survive and how much you can fund for it? I think as of know in our generation technology is very good target business because majority of the country are using modern technology.

The tricky part Rim experienced is how they intercept a market trend? How they intercept industrial trend? And how they find the customers? The overcome it through their learning’s in Mobetix application they developed.

One of Lazardis major turning points or dreams is started during his high school days he wants to build some kind of space based technology.

One thing I can not forget in this story is the learning that when you to have strong co-p students, you have to start early before you lost it.

I believe that new graduates students in IT are much talented than those who have experienced in some company, they are more creative and aggressive to a particular things they want to achieve specially in terms of business.

The last story for this week I read is Marimba which is Arthur van Hoff is on of the cofounder. It founded in 19956 with Sami Shaio, Jonathan Payne, and Kim Polese.

Marimba received a lot of attention from the press and ventures capitalist because of Kim Polese as their CEO.

Before they decide to do start up literary they don’t have any idea for what they going to make so the first they do is to drive around and fine office space, next they put a little bit of money it is $25,000. In from this starting point they make money and a big business.

The things make me interested is about Kim during the time that Marimba is very famous but they notice that it also has a bad effect on their business, but for me a women as a CEO is not really a big thing as long as you do your jobs and if it have some problem with regard to my gender will I think it can fix in other things to cover it.

The advice they to someone who wants to do startups are; he said that if you have energy to do it, then you should try it yourself, but you need to have the ability to form a team around you with good people. Talents attracts talents, he said also that you need to have a direction that your interested in or a market that you see an opportunity in--but you shouldn’t get to stuck too much on details, because you can not foresee your future anyway, because you’ll go through many changes.

One good idea is to join startups that already funding because doing startup does mean that you need to give up your Job.

I think he is correct because if you start startups it means you need to give up your work, you can not do them at the same time. Willingness to forming a good team is good sign to a business and doing your best in a particular work or do it with your talents is is making the best thing and it make success.
