Case Study (Lotus development, Groove Networks and Pyra Labs/ Blooger.com)
After I read the story of Lotus Development I learned that Mitchell Kapor founded it 1982 with Jonathan Sachs. Kapor was a product manager of VisiCalc at Personal Software when he wrote VisiPlot and VisiTrend; he served as the presidents and CEO from 1982 to 1986 and director until 1987. He also confounded the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFE) in 1990 and now led the open source Applications Foundation.
Before the Lotus success they encounter failures first which help them a lot. The failures are series of mistakes in hiring; they did not build good middle management structure, mistakes in piching successor and inn product strategy.
As I read farther the story I learned new about startups like techniques in developing new system or product and key elements like right distribution. I like also his advice to the people want to starts startups; he said that he can not tell people what they don’t want to hear because they won’t care and just a waste of breath. He said you need to be passionate, committed, and believe in what you’re doing. Don’t work to someone who said that just help me to make the business be more successful.
I believe also that if you want a business partner chose person that you have the same vision, passion and you’re compatible because if you work with someone your not compatible with you can not make good business.
After I read the first story it makes me interesting to next story which Groove Networks/Iris Associates. Iris Associate is founded 1984 to develop Lotus Notes, Lotus Notes was the first widely used collaboration software. In 1997 Ozzie founded Groove Networks which built Internet-based work group collaboration software, but before that time he work in PLATO Notes and he led also to the development of Lotus Symphony.
The ideas he used is not based in technology, but based on the users need or potential customer’s product.
After made his own company he launched Groove Beta software in October 2000.
He believes that in the startups you’re on the mission together.
I am noticed that in the startups it just like analyzing and developing the existing system in order to have idea in what kind of startups must be starts. Just like the developing of Lotus and became Irish.
After Groove Networks it turns Pyra Labs/Blooger.com and the cofounder is Eva Williams and they founded it 1999 it is originally a web-based project management tool. He developed it to manage his weblog, and it became quickly an important mechanism for sharing ideas internally at Pyra. Pyra Labs started by doing internet stuff.
In this story I learned that the secret of Bloggers to success is when Williams learned to compromise.
In every business there are time comes that they want to quit in Pyra Williams wants to quit during there was a lot of points that he seriously considered craziness. He was getting negative feedback at that time on the web, and for the most part when he took over the company and kicked everyone out.
