Quote(Chapter 14): “The user interface has 2 main components: a.) Presentation Language which is the computer-to-human part of the transaction. b.) Action Language, which characterizes the human-to-computer portion.”

Types of User Interface

1)     Natural – Language Interfaces

It is the ideal of inexperienced users, they permit users to interact with computer in their everyday or natural language. An example of it is the website of Ask Jeeves. They respond with a list of queries that match to the information by the user.

2)     Question-and-Answer Interfaces

The computer displays a question to the user. It is to enters an answer to move to the next question. The example of it is a dialog box. It acts as a question-and-answer interface with in another application.

3)     Menus

It is a list of things in a specific area. It provides the ser with an onscreen list of available sections. It is where the users can chose between different kinds of typical word processing menu. It is not a hardware.

4)     Form –Fill Interfaces

It consist of onscreen forms or web-based forms displaying fields containing data hat need to communicate to the user. It is to display screens that are set-up to show what information can be highlighted with inverse or flashing characters.

The advantage of it is the printed version of the filled-in form provides excellent documentation. While, the disadvantage is the main drawback that experienced users to become impatient with the forms.

5)     Command –Language Interfaces

It allows the user to control application with a series of key strokes, commands, phrases, or sequences. It manipulate the computer as a tool by allowing the user to control the dialog and it affords the user to be more flexible and easy to control. It require memorization of Syntax rules that may be an obstacle for in experienced users.

6)     Graphical User Interface

It allow direct manipulation of the graphical representation on the screen. Direct Manipulation requires more system sophistication than the interfaces. The creation of GUI’s poses a challenge to the appropriate model of reality on acceptable conceptual model of representation must be invented.

Other User Interface:

·        Stylus -  It is being used in PDA’s, it is like a pen. It is a handheld computers.

·        Tablet PC – notebook computer with a stylus. More powerful than the handheld computer. They are both equipped with a Wi-Fi or a Bluetooth connection.

·        Touch-Sensitive Displays – allows a user to use a finger to activate display.

·        Voice Diagram – It recognizes an individuals vocal signals and convert them. It increases the speed of data entity, accuracy, and speed on mouse movements.
