Case Study

Charles Geschke

Cofounder, Adobe Systems

Charles Geschke and John Warnock started their own company named Adobe. It is to produce a Post Script. They partnered with Apple to have Laser Writer Printer. It was introduced in 1985 they created “desktop publishing”. I just learned that the adobe name came from a river called adobe Creek that is just at the back of Charles Geschke’s house. Also, their first product is about Laser Printers and later on expanded to different kinds of printers. Lastly, as the company being known, they have conflicts in choosing their right partners. They once quit their jobs because people usually misunderstood.

October of 1972 when Charles G. went to Xerox PARC. In the fall they have demonstration to the senior management of Xerox. They are concern to create some conceptual operating prototypes to a full production, supportable products. They were given a chance to focus in graphics and printing technologies to one of laboratories of PARC. Bill Hambrecht is one of Venture Capitals. He agreed on the idea of having laser printers and type setting equipment that can produce images.

By December 1983 they signed an agreement with Apple because they started developing Laser Printer that was known as Laser Writer. In 1984, the product is almost done but the senior sales management didn’t like it because it is more expensive than a computer. A man named John Scull decided to combine the three companies which is Apple, Aldus and Adobe to produce publishing industry. Desktop publishing became popular. In working with Inter Press, the idea was about the conceptual level. This conceptual levels are application software, interface to any printer resolutions, characteristics and files that will be transported. They design some hardware’s but not manufacturing it.

The company’s major turning points. First, their agreement with HP. Second, they also signed with IBM. Being single product company is difficult because of its high risk because of immediate changes.

The illustrator began when John’s wife wanted to have an output of his design so john build programs in Post Script. In coming out to the market they will go to a community who could understand technological and potential of the product.

There are a lot of company competing with them, trying to do similar things. HP is one of them, still competing with Laser Jet. Even though they have this competitors. Charles Geschke was happy on how people become responsive to their product in order to preserve the efficiency o the Adobe company they reinforced the CEO Bruce Chizen. Giving importance of innovation and taking investment of the company.  Having new ideas and concepts will help their products to stay in the market.

The key in being success is being passionate on what you are doing. Good communication to others will help you to be confident for any problems that will occur and lastly, give something to yourself.
